Celebrating 150 Years

This September we are thrilled to mark a very special milestone in the long history of Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street as the children's hospital celebrates its 150th anniversary! Check out some of the beautiful messages, memories and even poems below that our wonderful community have shared with us!

Last October the week after my son's 14th birthday he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We were rushed to Temple Street for him to have surgery. It was a whirlwind our lives changed overnight. We are forever grateful to his surgeon all the doctor's and staff from Temple Street and Crumlin for the support kindness and help were received during thst life changing time and still receive today with all his follow up appointments. Even though we have to travel up from the South of the country for appointments I know my son is in safe hands and is getting the best care he can. We can never be thankful enough that we still have our son with us. No one can ever imagine how your life can change over night so quickly it's like stepping into another world but having a hospital like Temple Street there ready to step in a help is priceless. We are currently fundraising for Temple Street with their Step'tember challenge we are lucky to be able to give something back coming up on the year anniversary of my son's surgery.

I was brought to Temple Street by ambulance at 6 years of age, 51 years ago with a blood issue. I ended up in hospital for 6 weeks. The care, doctors & teacher for school, I will always remember with such kindness. Remember going home with the feel of carpet being so strange! Incredible Angels x ,

Izzy our now 14-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2014 at almost 6 years of age. Within 2 hours at our local hospital in Cork we were told we had to go to Temple Street, when we landed we met the most lovely caring friendly & empathetic nurses & doctors & surgeons. Our thank you Temple Street neurosurgery team to give Izzy every bit of time so that medicine could finally catch up to save our little girls life. Without the team in those early days I have no idea how we would have gotten through. Temple street to this day is still Izzy’s favourite hospital & her memories of it are always of a happy time even though it was the biggest struggle For her life. Always Grateful.

An Ode to Temple Street

Bring to me the little ones, who’ve fallen in the street
Bloodied knees and broken wrists and badly swollen feet
Bring to me the babies, who keep you up all night
With Colic, Croup and temperatures, that give their parents fright

Scooters, bikes and skateboards, trampolines as well
It seems to me that all of these were well designed in hell
Come along and tell us all, what has befallen you
A stitch, a splint, a bandage, will have you good as new

Or maybe to the theatre, with little time to waste
A broken leg needs setting, let’s get this done with haste
The X – Ray room is hopping, creating eerie pics
Breaks and dislocations, all of which I’ll fix

A 12-year-old arrives to me, kick to face he got
Bravely stuck his head in, where many would have not
A cup match he was playing, and when he came around
Did we win? What was the score? Tea and toast he downed

It’s seven score and ten long years, since doors were opened wide
With doctors, nurses, surgeons, and many more besides
From the moment you are born, until your sixteenth year
In my care you will reside, you have no need to fear

Who am I hear you ask, and have we ever met
What route must be taken, if to you I will get
Oh my dear you’ll get to me, when you need me most
I’m waiting in the Temple, making tea and toast

Our daughter Triona spent a lot of time as an inpatient in Philomena’s ward and top flat. We have many happy memories shared some hard and good times together and Triona called it her second family. Wishing all the staff a happy anniversary.

As a child growing up on the Northside of the city Temple Street was a huge part of our lives. As much as Our Lady's in Crumlin was to the families on the southside of the city. We were taken to Temple Street as children for urgent care My own children were also taken to Temple Street, Now my grandchild is taken here for treatment.
While the hospital celebrates 150 years almost 1/3 of their history is in my soul. As a child I yearned to be a part of this wonderful place.
In 2012 I qualified as a childrens nurse and I now work here. To make a difference to a sick child or their family is an absolute privilege. Congratulations on 150th anniversary,

- Michelle

Feeling so proud watching my sister Jeanette bring in her therapy dogs, Buster and Schui and the joy in the children's eyes after meeting them.

My daughter was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was 6 weeks, since then she has been a patient with Temple Street Hospital. I would like to thank all the staff especially the CF team for all their support and help for all the years when she has attended and had to stay in Temple Street. We will miss them greatly when she leaves soon to go to adult services. Over the years when she was young it was a second home to us and without their guidance and kindness through the good and bad you got us through it xxx

Congratulations on your 150th anniversary you are an amazing hospital we spent 4 months with you in 2013 with our boy.

I am writing this as a staff member. My first child died unexpectedly at birth. I will never forget the outpouring of love that came from Temple St. The Chaplains held a service in the hospital chapel and this was attended by staff from across the hospital. I received fantastic support from senior management and my own department on returning to work. Without this support I would not have felt able to return to the workplace. It really is a special place to work. My living children have been in kind and caring hands on their a&e visits.

Im so proud to have worked in Temple Street for the last 38 years. I started in Temple Street as a Student Nurse in 1984. My Mam and two Aunts also trained and worked as nurses, which means since 1952 a member of my family has been a nurse in Temple Street. My Aunt was a ward sister for many years on St Patrick’s ward. Ena retired in 1997.

Happiest of birthdays to Temple Street and to all the Team at St. Michael's B. Our son Jack spent 6 weeks in St. Michael's B back in February and they were a huge part on our long 9 month hospital journey so far. We cannot thank them enough for their kindness and everything they did to help Jack and us through our difficult time. Enjoy the celebrations ye truly deserve it.
