VIP Days: Bringing Joy to Children in Hospital
A simple idea, born from compassion and creativity, is making a meaningful difference in the lives of children facing long hospital stays.
The “VIP (Very Important Patient) Day” initiative was developed by the Play Specialist and Clinical Nurse Manager team on the Surgical Flat ward at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Temple Street. Designed to support long-term patients, VIP Days offer personalised celebrations that bring joy, comfort and a sense of normal childhood into the hospital environment.
Where it all began
The initiative started with one young patient from Donegal who was feeling particularly low during her time in hospital, far from her family, friends and home comforts. Her mum shared concerns about her daughter’s mood, and it was clear that a typical party wouldn’t be possible in a hospital setting.
Thinking creatively, the team organised a special “Donegal Day” — a personalised celebration filled with games, laughter, treats and prizes. The impact was immediate and powerful.
The young patient described it as her “best day ever,” and the difference in her mood was evident not only to her family but also to the care team supporting her.
Creating something special
Encouraged by the success of that day, the team introduced VIP Days for other children who might need a similar boost along their hospital journey.
Since then, the Surgical Flat ward has hosted 11 VIP Days, each one uniquely tailored to the individual child. Themes are inspired by what matters most to each patient — from hobbies and favourite activities to county pride, home comforts, or even the chance to be “boss for the day.”
As one young patient shared:
“Everyone wants to be part of a VIP Day because they are so much fun!”
Made possible by generosity
Thanks to the generosity of Children’s Health Foundation supporters, VIP Days have grown into truly special experiences.
Funding allows the team to provide themed sustainable decorations, delicious food, sweet treats and even tickets to events. Whether it’s a Princess Day, a superhero celebration, or something completely unique, each VIP Day gives children the chance to simply be children again — even in hospital.
The impact of small moments
VIP Days are a powerful reminder that even small moments of joy can make a big difference during difficult times.
Currently, the initiative runs on one hospital ward, led by a dedicated and passionate team. With continued support, there is an opportunity to expand VIP Days to more departments across Children’s Health Ireland hospitals and urgent care centres.
Just €2,000 can fund a full year of VIP Days for one ward — bringing smiles, laughter and lasting memories to children who need it most.
Your support matters
Children’s Health Foundation relies entirely on the kindness and generosity of individuals, communities and corporate partners across Ireland and beyond.
This vital support helps ensure that every sick child can still experience the joy of childhood while in hospital. It also funds life-saving equipment, essential family supports, enhanced facilities, new services and critical paediatric research.
