Chloe's Story
At just 10 years old, Chloe Jarrell has faced more medical challenges than most people do in a lifetime.
Born prematurely at just 32 weeks, Chloe’s health struggles began from birth. Lisa, Chloe’s Mum, recalls: “When Chloe was born, she wasn’t breathing and had to be resuscitated and incubated.” It was the first of many battles Chloe would have to fight.
She was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a genetic condition that causes tumours to grow along the nerves. Over time, more conditions emerged, making her journey even more challenging. Chloe was later diagnosed with arthritis, a syrinx on her spine, and significant dental complications. These conditions cause her immense pain, often making daily activities difficult.
In addition to these debilitating conditions, Chloe also suffers from regular migraines, headaches and tummy issues.
Throughout her journey, Chloe has been supported by an incredible team of doctors, nurses, and specialists in Children’s Health Ireland hospitals. Lisa says one doctor in particular has made a lasting impact: “Dr. Jean Donnelly has been amazing” going above and beyond for Chloe.
Under the care of multiple specialists, including a neurosurgeon in Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street, Chloe receives ongoing treatment to help manage her complex conditions. She currently takes biweekly injections to manage her arthritis. “Her medication she’s on now is really helpful” says Lisa.
Because of her ongoing medical challenges, Chloe unfortunately has no choice but to miss school at times. In addition to her health struggles, she has additional needs and attends an ASD class, where she benefits from sensory and movement rooms that provide her with comfort and support.
Outside of school, Chloe finds great comfort in her beloved pet pony. “Her pony is her world,” Lisa says. “She just loves being with him. If she’s having a bad day or just feeling miserable, she goes to him, and it all goes away.”
Despite these medical challenges, Chloe remains a bright and cheerful child. “Although she goes through a lot, she’s always smiling”. Chloe has been involved in a number of campaigns with Children’s Health Foundation, and is always eager to help any way she can. Her resilience and kindness make her an inspiration to all who meet her.
