About CHI at Temple Street

Since 1872, CHI at Temple Street (formerly Temple Street Children’s University Hospital) has been providing around-the-clock, expert care to sick children and their families. CHI at Temple Street is an acute national children’s hospital and its specialities include:

– Neonatal and paediatric surgery

– Neurology

– Neurosurgery (national centre for over 6 years)

– Nephrology

– Orthopaedics

– Ear, Nose & Throat

– Plastic Surgery.

The National Paediatric Craniofacial Centre (NPCC), the National Centre for Inherited Metabolic Disorders (NCIMD) and the National New-born Screening Centre (NNSC), the National Centre for Paediatric Ophthalmology, the National Airways Management Centre and the National Meningococcal Laboratory are all based in CHI at Temple Street.

CHI at Temple Street is the National Centre for the Provision of Haemodialysis for children in Ireland, and the National Centre for Pediatric Renal Transplantation.

CHI at Temple Street cares for up to 130,000 children per year. There are over 30 different clinical specialties at CHI at Temple Street.

IN 2020, the hospital had:

– 34,445 emergency department attendances

– 5,432 day cases

– 5,936 inpatient admissions

– 43,758 outpatient attendances

– 4,493 surgical procedures

These are down on previous year’s figures due to the effects of COVID-19 on services.

There is a strong focus on quality and patient safety as evidenced by a myriad of quality improvement initiatives within CHI at Temple Street.

CHI at Temple Street has an active history of research, and in the advancement of children’s healthcare. They have an active research department, which has overseen the development of a clinical research programme for CHI at Temple Street.
