Hotels for Little Heroes

November 2023

Hotels for Little Heroes

Every day, hundreds of children get ready for bed in Children’s Health Ireland hospitals and urgent care centres instead of getting tucked into their own bed at home. This November, we’re asking hotels right across Ireland to donate a night and change a life!

By donating the cost of a night in your hotel, you will be supporting little heroes spending a night in hospital and raising vital funds to support the life-saving work of Children’s Health Ireland hospitals and urgent care centres at Crumlin, Temple Street, Tallaght and Connolly. Your support means that we can continue to invest in vital medical equipment, paediatric research, new and emerging therapies, and patient care programmes to give every sick child the best possible chance.

Simply fill in the registration form to sign up and become a Hotel for Little Heroes! You will receive promotional materials to share with your customers that you are donating the cost of a night’s stay on Friday, 3rd of November to support sick children spending the night in Children’s Health Ireland’s hospitals and urgent care centres.

How to increase your impact!

If you would like to do more to support sick children in hospital, there are several ways to get involved-

Your hotel can take part in fundraising over the Autumn mid-term break to complement your donation of the cost of a night’s stay in your hotel. This weekend of fundraising is a great way for you to involve your staff in the part you are playing in supporting sick children. You can also get your customers in on the action too! Tick the box on the registration from to request your fundraising pack, which contains a fundraising guide full of tips, tricks and ideas. If your hotel would like to do more to support sick children in Children’s Health Ireland hospitals and urgent care centres at Crumlin, Temple Street, Tallaght and Connolly, but fundraising during the mid-term break doesn’t suit you, reach out to the Corporate Team at corporate@childrenshealth.ie and we can chat through the many options available to you. We have a wide range of events throughout the year suitable for staff fundraising, as well as charity of the year and corporate partnership supports.

Alexis' Story

Alexis O’Mahony from Killarney first visited Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street three days after she was born.

As her father Steve put it: “That was our first trip up and down to Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street and this has continued over the past seven years. Alexis has grown up there and it’s like a home away from home.” Alexis was born with PDH, a rare and serious condition that affects her metabolism.

The past few years have been challenging for Alexis and her parents. “Alexis had no energy as a baby, no energy to smile or even cry” said Teresa, Alexis’s mother. “One night I heard a big laugh, I was overjoyed – where was this energy coming from? But it wasn’t a laugh, she was having a fit.”

Teresa and Steve are grateful for all the support of the staff in Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street, whose care goes beyond the medical. “Whether nurse or professor, people from different departments interact with Alexis and us on a human level.” said Steve. “They’re always there if we have questions or need anything. That human touch is really important.”

Teresa added: “You feel that you matter to the doctors, they make you feel important. I remember one time I was stopped in the corridor with Alexis and a doctor said ‘Oh my god, is that Alexis, how she’s grown!’ He hadn’t seen her in years.”

Patient and family supports, many funded by generous donations, are an integral part of Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street to make the experience of both patient and parents as positive as possible. “Any time we come to Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street, the Play Department is ready for Alexis. They would always be ready with a present left at the end of the bed,” said Steve.

Teresa sees the impact that these additional services can have. “The Sensory Room is great; Alexis absolutely loves it. She also loves the Dog Therapy and the Clown Doctors. Music Therapy is wonderful too, it makes Alexis so calm, and the difference is amazing.”

By registering to take part in Hotels for Little Heroes, your hotel will support children like Alexis and their families as they spend nights in hospital beds in Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, Temple Street, Tallaght, and Connolly.
