Your support could help Save a Smile for children like Harry
As a mother, I’ve seen how your kindness can bring joy in difficult times…
I’ll never forget my son Harry’s first Christmas. Instead of being at home with his four big brothers and sisters, our tiny baby boy, just a couple of months old, was in hospital, fighting for his life.
Machines beeped around him and wires covered his delicate little body. My husband, Keith, and I were terrified of what the future might hold.
Nothing prepares you for an experience like that – for the sheer level of worry it places in your heart as a parent.
Harry is nine now. He is funny, sensitive, and overflowing with imagination. He loves Minecraft, Roblox and his Dog Man books.
From the outside, Harry looks like any other boy his age. But his childhood has been very different.
Born with a serious heart condition, he has spent long stretches of his life in hospital. There have been endless procedures, frightening setbacks and times when we wondered if we would ever get him home again.
Your past kindness has brought comfort and joy to children like Harry, and I am so grateful. With your help today, you could bring hope and a smile to families facing long, dark days and nights in hospital – not just at Christmas time but all year round.
Your support helps provide world-class medical care, but also the “extras” – play, music, and family supports – that make the hardest days a little easier.
These are the things that remind children they are still children, and remind parents that we are not alone.
Throughout Harry’s journey, we have been so thankful for the way he is treated as more than just a patient. The doctors and nurses are incredible, but it’s those extras that have made such a difference and helped him smile.
I think of the health play specialist who distracted Harry with jigsaws and colouring when he was small, the music therapist who soothed him with ballads at his bedside, and the playroom where he could laugh with other kids and feel, for a while, like a normal little boy.
These precious moments only exist because of the generosity of people like you.
As parents, Keith and I also needed support. There were days when I was truly exhausted, back and forth between Harry in hospital and the rest of my children at home. I’ll never forget how a psychologist would talk with me, helping me share worries I didn’t even realise I was carrying.
Christmas in hospital is never easy, but it can still be magical because of kind supporters like you.
I remember when Harry was a baby in ICU, so sick and so small, and yet Santa still came to visit. For those moments, we felt seen and cared for.
You can’t imagine what that means when your world has been turned upside down.
Harry has been through more than any child should. And yet, he is still full of smiles. He’s happy reading, playing, building Minecraft worlds, and being surrounded by our big, loving family.
The truth is, children like Harry, and parents like us, can’t do it alone. We rely on doctors, nurses, therapists, carers, and the support of kind people like you.
Your donation will fund the extras that make all the difference – play, music, family supports, and the small touches that bring a smile on the hardest days. These are not luxuries. They are lifelines.
When Harry was scared, play made him brave. When I was exhausted, a kind word from staff kept me going. When Christmas felt like another mountain to climb, supporters like you made sure it still felt magical. That is the impact you have.
Help us to Save a Smile for sick children. Do it for Harry, and for all the children spending this Christmas in hospital. Do it for the parents who will be standing by their bedsides, badly needing the hope your kindness can bring.
From our family to yours, thank you.
Leanne
Harry’s mum
